Repeated worker and employer surveys likewise found that employees place substantial value on working from home, largely because it saves commuting and preparation time, while employers anticipated continued hybrid arrangements (see Figure 2). These findings establish valued benefits and plausible recruitment or retention advantages, but much of the underlying evidence is observational or preference-based and therefore does not prove superior organizational productivity. The productivity case for remote work is strongest for independently performed, digitally mediated tasks. Personnel and activity data for more than 10,000 skilled IT professionals showed roughly stable output under compulsory home working, but longer working hours implied an estimated 8–19% decline in output per hour. The same setting exhibited increased communication and coordination costs and less uninterrupted work, demonstrating why stable total output can conceal reduced efficiency and transferred time costs. Firm-wide remote work can also alter the collaboration networks on which interdependent knowledge work depends. Communication records from 61,182 Microsoft employees indicated that company-wide remote work made networks more static and siloed, reduced synchronous communication, and increased reliance on asynchronous media. Those patterns may make complex information sharing harder, although the observational, pandemic-era, single-firm design does not establish every downstream productivity consequence.
